The Boy Will Die – Revenge (2013)

The Boy Will Die
Album:  Revenge
Genre:  Deathcore/Metalcore

Track Listing:
1. The Gates
2. Given To Filth
3. It Has Begun
4. Bannermen
5. Bury Yours
6. Welcome To District 13

Preview:  “Bury Yours”

This is the kind of deathcore that I like to hear – less concentration on “2brootz4u” chugging, more focus on riff-writing, sort of similar to great metalcore bands like Unearth, minus the clean sections!  I’d describe their sound as a mixture of As Blood Runs Black, Ocellus, As Shadows Collapse, and some older The Faceless.  They got MY money!

If you were to click on the preview link, you’d hear a LOT of influence from “Organic Hallucinosis”-era Decapitated and maybe some Sepultura (?), along with some fist-pumping gallop riffs, a la older thrash bands.  Unfortunately you can’t buy this album yet, but Omophagia is definitely some KILLER death metal.

One of Australia's most talented bands, Caligula's Horse, just unleashed what's probably their heaviest and most progressive track to date, thus vindicating the fact that they're one of my 5 favorite bands out of Australia!  Plus, their vocalist is wayyyyy too good!  For fans of Coheed and Cambria, Periphery, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Cynic - The Official Page, Vanisher, Deftones, and so many more.  I can’t wait to hear their full length on October 1st :)

“With a modern and individual approach to music that channels the raw honesty of classic rock and the skill of progressive metal into a voice at once energetic, grand and forthright, CALIGULA’S HORSE offers devotees of all strains of powerful and progressive music something new and unique.”

Easily one of the best technical deathcore albums you’ll hear; some fucking balls-to-the-wall shred here!  Sounds like the wretched demon spawn of Beneath The Massacre, Wormed, and Infant Annihilator, after ingesting a cocktail of steroids, acid, and crystal meth.  Listen to the whole thing below, and buy it if you can!

Genre:  Progressive/Atmospheric Death Metal

Track Listing:
1. Stench Of The Iron Age
2. Ghosts She Sends
3. The Mountain Top
4. Song Of The Crippled Bull

Support:  Bandcamp ($3)

The preview song is fucking BRILLIANT, and I can tell you right now, none of the other songs sound like it – they each have vocals, but the title track was so good I had to include it.  If you loved the off-the-walls death metal stylings of Slice The Cake, Wretched, or The Bridal Procession, or the sludgy, lumbering style of Boreworm or Fallujah’s more atmospheric and less technical sections, definitely give BCI a chance.  They even sound kind of like Opeth or My Hollow at some points!  I don’t really know how else to describe them, but it’s pretty damn inspired stuff that’ll do more than keep you on your toes.  They absolutely earned themselves a fan!

Virginia Wolf – Hunt.Stalk.Kill.Bury.Regret. (2012)

Preview:  “Bury”

Definitely not what you’d expect from the album art, but damn, if you’re looking for fucking EVIL deathcore with insanely creepy-sounding vibes, Virginia Wolf is JUST the thing for you.  This album is based around the kill cycle of a serial killer, and it shows.

Unfortunately, the band is now broken up and the album is now only available on Youtube, and I had to rip “Kill” from a drum playthrough video.

3. Sirens
4. Flotsam
5. Breaker (B-Side)

Download (320kbps)
Support:  Bandcamp ($5.25)

If you’ve EVER liked metalcore of any kind, get ready to be blown away, but don’t let that prog metalcore tag scare you; there’s absolutely NO djent or whiny cleans involved!  Were it not for Bring Me Solace (posted HERE), I’d say that this was easily the metalcore EP of the year…I actually didn’t know this outstanding EP had come out until just this morning!  Andy Rive was my favorite brand-new metalcore find on the DuckCore compilation (http://duckcore.bandcamp.com) because of their somewhat unconventional approach to traditional metalcore – there’s TONS of ethereal atmosphere, lots of crushing riffs and breakdowns, well-written leads with oodles of technicality and melody, and ZERO cleans.  Buy it if you can!

9. Dark Throne
10. Legion
11. Nailed

Download (320kbps):  Bandcamp / Zippy

Holy SHITTTTTTT this is some heavy music…definitely not what I expected based on the awful band name, which kinda suggests goregrind!  Don't let the name fool you too -- Anal Phobia is actually a REALLY heavy mixture of technical deathcore, grindcore, brutal death metal, and some slam \m/  Fans of littledidweknow or Infant Annihilator will get the hell down on this…although I actually prefer this to IA, since there's a LOT less time spent in breakdowns here.

Apex Of Apathy – The Flying Machine (2013)

Apex Of Apathy

10. The Stranger

Download (320kbps):  Bandcamp / Zippy

This is so DEFINITELY not my usual post, but I stumbled across the preview song on Youtube and was really into it, so I figured I'd share!  Apex Of Apathy is definitely something fans of Closure In Moscow, Coheed & Cambria, or some of interruptio's uploads will enjoy quite a lot.  The vocals aren't quite as good as either of those bands, but musically it's quite similar, albeit more relaxing.

Towers – Into The Void (2013)

Support:  iTunes ($6.93)

Extremely hard-hitting deathcore that really sounds like it should be from Australia, but isn’t…trust me, this is all KINDS of heavy.  I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the cover art and album name look and sound a lot like that of Stories from earlier this year.  Fans of I Declare War, Seditionist, Isolations, Oceano, and uhhh…other absurdly heavy bands would be wise to preview & buy :)  Check out our near-and-dear wordsmith and chug-lover Connor's review of the album over HERE AT THE NEW TRANSCENDENCE.

6. The Sightless Inquisition (feat. Brandon Davis, ex Across The Sun)

Surprise!  Bring Me Solace’s final effort is actually TWO releases!  Put this up next to Auras and Entities for the progressive metalcore EP of the year.  Yeah, Bring Me Solace are THAT good…or should I say “were”, these will be their final releases :(  Outrageously beautiful, passionate compositions with some whimsical atmosphere that has some definite Erra feel to it!  Their previous EP “Nomadic Refuge” earned a very high placement on my countdown in 2011, at least one of these will DEFINITELY be doing the same this year.

Chicago based band, just dropped their first EP, a concept album based on 'dystopian allegory' and the 'horrors comitted in the name of a twisted god'. Quite refreshing in my opinion. Check the preview and judge for yourself.

The bassist of Out Of Yesteryear's new album and I have been talking recently, turns out he knows some pretty sexy bands. Check these guys out, only 20 likes on facebook and they still released this crazy album (keep in mind: They most likely do have a VK account, but all of us Facebook users should help them blow up). The vocals of this band remind me of a more pissed off Shiv style from Ovdi and 7 hornets 7 guys (HA I'M FUNNY), and it's packed all together by threads of sorrow. The atmosphere is really dark throughout the whole EP and definitely keeps me craving for more. Give these guys a Like and pick up this phenomenal EP.

Some heavy, shreddy goodness that fuses the chaotic technical elements of Abiotic, The Faceless, and even some goregrind.  The stomps/grooves in that preview song are awesome.  I've been waiting a while to hear more than just two or three songs from this band!

And you thought Serocs (posted HERE) was good technical death metal?  Just fucking wait until your ears get a load of THIS album.  Fans of Spawn Of Possession or Deeds Of Flesh might just consider this for a pretty high appearance on their album of the year list, right up there with “Portals of Canaan”…I think I actually like “Ecstasy of God” better – it’s markedly more catchy and digestable!  German metal in absolute peak form right here.  Even though they’re charging an ungodly sum of money for this album, I’ll be purchasing it in short order.  You can stream it for a couple days via Soundcloud below:

I’ve been meaning to post this album for quite some time, because these guys have a really unique thing going on; more intricate riffs and song structures than you’d expect from this sort of band.  While a lot of the songs on the album sound kind of the same, I’ve still gotten two pretty fun listens out of “Futuristic Composed”.  KBC kind of sound like a fusion of Within The Ruins’ style of shredding, Depths Of Hatred-ish grooves, Your Chance To Die (except way more complex drumming) ish riffs, early The Faceless, Nexilva, and some Veil of Maya for good measure.  Check out our buddy Connor’s 9/10 review over at The New Transcendence HERE.  Unfortunately, this album is only available for order in physical copy…I’ve asked the band to put up a digital purchase for some time, but they haven’t gotten back to me :(

PS:  Watch for an update to this post, I'm going to ask the band if I can post it for download on here...

Very interesting. The songwriting has so much Tosin Abasi-style, but it isn´t just a copy. The atmosphere is very unique, it´s not the boring "taking some Djent grooves together", it´s intelligent, AAL-influenced Prog Metal.

2. Decompressed

Download  "Extrinsic Lucidity" (320kbps)
Download "Decompressed" (320kbps)

I don't usually post singles/dual tracks for download, but FUCK does this deserve an exception.  Sounds a lot like what would happen if a REALLY heavy Veil Of Maya made a groove-baby with Erra.  UNNNNFFFF.

Right To The Void – Kingdom of Vanity (2013)

Right To The Void
Album:  Kingdom Of Vanity
Genre:  Technical/Blackened Deathcore

Track Listing:
1. Like A Disease
2. Phoenix
3. World Decay
4. A Black Conclusion
5. War Of Glory
6. In Oblivion
7. Reborn From Ashes
8. Again And Again…Until The End
9. Kingdom Of Vanity
10. Stay
11. We Have Failed

Support:  iTunes ($9.99)

Now THIS is my kind of band.  Another one of those albums I’ve been meaning to post for quite some time!  “Kingdom of Vanity” will definitely be making an appearance on my album of the year list at the end of this year, just like Coronado.  Think of Depths Of Hatred, add a bit of groove and some TBDM-esque melodies, then make the songs longer.  Sounds pretty evil, right?  Plus, DAT ART.

Serocs – The Next (2013)

Serocs
Album:  The Next
Genre:  Technical Death Metal

Track Listing:
1. The Next
2. The Variable
3. Urban Terror
4. Weakness Fed The Fear
5. The Hellgramite Method
6. The Shining One
7. Chernovile
8. Alienus Gignesthai

Support:  Bandcamp ($8)

Crazy, shreddy tech death for fans of Nebulous, Deeds Of Flesh, Dysmorphic, Pyrexia, Hideous Divinity, and the ilk.  That second preview song has some really funky basslines going on too!

Bispora – The Pineal Chronicles Phase I: Furtherance (2013)

Bispora
Album:  The Pineal Chronicles Phase I:  Furtherance
Genre:  Progressive Metal

Track Listing:
1. The Expedition
2. Where Ocean Meets Land
3. Guru
4. Peripheral
5. The Arcane Hatch
6. Eyes From Above
7. A Surge From Above

Support:  Bandcamp ($5)

Are you a fan of prog metal bands like Between The Buried and Me or The Odious?  Well, I have just the thing to whet your whistle.  Bispora’s first full length definitely has a lot of stuff going on!  A little less jazz “strut” than BTBAM, but a bit more funk-esque groove, and even some technical death metal-ish riffs (like in the intro of the second preview track)!  Try to buy the album if you can, Bispora is trying to be able to afford merch :)

Coronado – Origins (2013)

Coronado
Album:  Origins
Genre:  Progressive Metal/Deathcore

Track Listing:
1. Every Question
2. Flicker
3. As Loud As Thunder
4. Hypnagogia
5. Axis
6. Action; Reaction
7. Never Let Go

Think The Contortionist meets TesseracT’s heavier moments, add some harsh vocals, mix in some Born Of Osiris, Kardashev, Erra, and Slice The Cake, and you have what this album sounds like.  Yeah…Coronado is THAT good.  I am so fucking stoked on this album guys, and you can bet it'll make an appearance on my album of the year list this year <3

Okay, I didn´t expect that. A very nice mesh up between early Opeth, Emperor, Arcturus, Wintersun, At The Gates and some new stuff like Insomnium or In Mourning. This sounds so fucking scandinavian.
